Fern Tree is 10km from the centre of Hobart in the forested foothills of Mt Wellington. The Pinnacle Road to the summit heads up from Fern Tree.
There are many ways to get here:
Metro Tasmania operates the bus service to Fern Tree from Hobart. Catch a 48 or 49 Bus from Stop M at Franklin Square (diagonally opposite the GPO). The 48 bus travels up to Fern Tree direct on Huon Road (15-20 minutes), while the 49 takes a detour through South Hobart, including Cascade Brewery, and Strickland Ave (20-30 minutes). If you plan a walk get off at the Fern Tree Tavern. (Note - the return stop is hidden just around the corner further along Huon Rd).
It takes 1-2 hours to cycle to Fern Tree (but less than 45 minutes to come back down!)
There are several routes available for cyclists. The most direct is via Huon Road, but this is also the busiest route. Longer but less trafficked is via Strickland Ave. Less busy still but very much steeper is via Ridgeway. It is difficult to find a safe route out of town: cycle east along Collins St to the end, cross Molle St and get onto the South Hobart Rivulet walkway. This will take you as far as Anglesea St and onto the top end of Macquarie St. Either stay on Macquarie St towards Strickland Ave and Fern Tree, or climb up to Davey St for Huon Rd or the Ridgeway route via Waterworks Reserve.
There are also several mountain bike tracks available of varying difficulty.
At one time people thought nothing of walking to and from Fern Tree! There are many possible routes (see the Mt Wellington walk map) and a walk can be combined with the bus.
One of the most pleasant is the Pipeline Track. At the Fern Tree end the track starts at Stephenson's Place behind the water treatment plant. The downhill walk takes about 2 hours to Waterworks Reserve, and another hour into the city, or take a bus.
Drive west along Davey St (signs for Kingston, Huonville), get in the right hand lane and go straight on at the last set of traffic lights (don't turn left to Kingston; it is some distance before you can turn around). Davey St becomes Huon Rd and continues all the way to Fern Tree.
